Northumbria Research Link

Open Access gives free, unrestricted online access to academic publications by removing the subscription barrier. This gives you access to a larger body of research, whilst also making your research available to a much broader audience. This increases the potential for your research to be more widely used and cited.

There are two main routes to achieving Open Access:

  • Publish in a subscription journal and deposit your accepted manuscript online, in a repository such as Northumbria Research Link.
  • Publish in a journal where the article will be freely available through the publisher’s website. There is often a cost involved in doing this.

Depending on the publisher, sometimes there can be a delay before an article can be made accessible through a repository. In both routes, the ability of the end user to read, download or re-use the article will depend on the publisher's terms and conditions. Tools like Sherpa/Romeo and rchive.it can help see what options are available. The Scholarly Publications Team are also able to help, either by email or phone 0191 243 7705.
