Open Access at Northumbria University
Northumbria University creates and applies knowledge for the benefit of individuals, communities and the economy. Our Corporate Strategy 2013-18 and Vision 2025 sets out how we will grow high quality research and use it to drive excellence in all of our activities. The results of the 2014 Research Excellence Framework demonstrate that Northumbria has made a major step forward & has nearly tripled its share of research rated world-leading & internationally excellent.
Open Access publication (OA) is integral to scholarly communication in the digital age, and agencies across the world are implementing new policies to accelerate the transition from historic publishing models. Research funders, including RCUK, have made OA publication a requirement, and HEFCE require that certain research outputs be made OA to be eligible for submission to the post-2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF).
To ensure scholarly publication at Northumbria supports our research impact and meets the opportunities and challenges presented by OA, the University’s Research and Innovation Committee’s Working Group on Open Access developed an OA policy which the University Executive approved in 2014.
The University requires all Northumbria researchers to ensure the OA compliance of their scholarly publications. This guide provides information, advice and guidance on the University OA policy, how to ensure compliance with funder and HEFCE requirements, how to access the University’s publication fund, and who to contact for further support.
